Pregnancy and Tooth Decay - Why You Should Be Worried

Posted on 8/15/2025 by Dr. Sam Kelly
Row of five animated teeth, all smiling except for the middle tooth which frowns, due to tooth decay. Congratulations! You're pregnant. This is an exciting time filled with anticipation and joy. But amidst the preparations for your little one's arrival, it's important to remember that your own health, including your oral health, is crucial.

Pregnancy brings many changes to your body, and your mouth is no exception. Hormonal fluctuations can make you more susceptible to a condition called pregnancy gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. This can lead to red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed easily, especially when brushing or flossing.

While pregnancy gingivitis is common, it's not something to ignore. Left untreated, it can progress to a more serious condition called periodontitis, which can damage the tissues and bones that support your teeth. This can eventually lead to tooth loss.

But the impact of poor oral health during pregnancy goes beyond just your own teeth and gums. Studies have shown a link between gum disease and premature birth and low birth weight babies.

So, what can you do to protect your oral health during pregnancy? Here are some tips:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
•  Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. This is especially important during pregnancy, as your dentist can monitor your oral health and provide guidance on how to keep your mouth healthy.
•  Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
•  Limit sugary drinks and snacks.
•  Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

By following these tips, you can help prevent pregnancy gingivitis and protect your oral health – and the health of your baby.

Remember, prevention dentistry is key. Taking care of your teeth and gums now can help you avoid problems later on, both for yourself and your child.

Talk to your dentist about any concerns you have about your oral health during pregnancy. They can provide you with personalized advice and help you develop a plan to keep your smile healthy and bright.
