What to Do If You Notice Sensitivity in Your Teeth

Posted on 8/10/2020 by Barbara Ketchum
What to Do If You Notice Sensitivity in Your TeethIf you notice that your teeth are more sensitive, don't try to handle things yourself. You should never consider a DIY approach. Instead, you should call our office right away and schedule an appointment. While the sensitivity may not be related to anything serious, it could be a warning of something more severe in the making. That is why we urge all dental patients to call our office if they notice any signs of dental sensitivity.

What Can Cause Dental Sensitivity?

Sensitivity of the teeth can result because of various reasons. For example, dental sensitivity may develop if you are using a firm toothbrush or are brushing too hard. Either practice will wear down the tooth enamel and expose the dentin, promoting recession of the soft tissues. Inflamed and sore gums can also cause dental sensitivity, as can a cracked tooth. A cracked tooth may fill with bacteria and plaque, which can inflame the pulp and cause an abscess. If you grind your teeth while sleeping, this too can wear down the enamel and cause your teeth to hurt. Acidic foods trigger sensitivity as well as some dental procedures. These procedures may include root planing or replacing a restoration, such as a filling or a crown.

Should I Use a Toothpaste or Mouthwash that Reduces Sensitivity?

Again, you should not try to handle a sensitivity issue yourself. Instead, we encourage you to contact our office first before doing anything else. We need to determine the reason for the sensitivity before recommending a remedy or developing a treatment plan.

Look at dental sensitivity as a warning of a dental issue that should not be ignored. If you are experiencing dental sensitivity currently, contact our office for an appointment. Don't wait, as the problem can worsen over time. Give us a call now so we can determine the reason for the sensitivity and provide you with the proper care.
