Does Toothpaste Ever Expire?

Posted on 11/9/2020 by Barbara Ketchum
Does Toothpaste Ever Expire?Toothpaste can expire; this is a fact that several people do not know. The American Dental Association (ADA) requires all toothpaste to have an expiry date. It does not mean that the toothpaste will be unfit for use after the expiry date, but it will be less effective.

When Does a Toothpaste Expire?

Toothpaste has a two-year shelf life from the date of manufacture. Two years is the duration that the fluoride content will be available in the toothpaste. Fluoride binds the tooth and enamel strengthening it from cavities.

What Happens When a Toothpaste Expires?

After two years, the fluoride used in toothpaste manufacturing becomes less beneficial because it loses its ability to eliminate the bacteria. It will also be unpleasant to your taste buds because the flavoring ingredients start to separate after the expiry date. Some toothpaste becomes hard to squeeze because they start drying out. These do not happen in a single day, but the expiry date marks the day it starts.

What to Do with Expired Toothpaste

Before you purchase toothpaste, check on the expiry date first. You will be able to stay away from using a toothpaste that has already expired. If you find yourself in such a situation where you are in possession of an expired toothpaste, do not throw the toothpaste away. You can use it when cleaning your sink because it is a natural abrasive with silica and baking soda; these two are suitable for cleaning. You can also use the expired toothpaste to renew leather shoes. Use it in the place of shoe cleaners. Rub it on the leather using a soft cloth, then use a damp cloth to get rid of the toothpaste. It makes your shoe look as good as new.

Simply put, never use expired toothpaste for your oral cleaning. For more information, feel free to contact us.
