Dental X-Rays Salem ORFor nearly 125 years, X-rays have been giving healthcare providers a better look at your teeth and bones. Not only are they a fantastic diagnostic tool, but they are also quite safe, making them an unmatched resource in giving you quality dental treatment. We here at Oak Park Dental use dental X-rays to safely ensure that your teeth are healthy. Yes, we understand that you may have questions, concern, or even anxiety about X-rays, which is why we want you to feel confident that we are looking out for your best interests when you are sitting in our exam chair at your next dental exam. What are Dental X-Rays Used For?Dental X-rays are not just looking for cavities; they serve many purposes in our office! They are a valuable resource, giving us the ability to both diagnose and treat a wide variety of dental conditions. We can use them to check your tooth roots to ensure they are strong and that you have not suffered any bone or root loss, determine if you have any degree of periodontal disease and the severity of it, and to check on any teeth that may be lingering under the surface of your gums. We can also check for dental abscesses (pockets of pus or infection in your teeth) and even tumors. When we take X-rays of your mouth, there are a few key areas that we are focused on. The main area we typically check is something called your “bitewings,” which is the upper and lower area of your back teeth. We can check your bite and make sure you do not have any alignment issues while also ruling out any decay on or between these teeth. We may also take a periapical X-ray, which gives us a complete view of your tooth from top to bottom. A panoramic X-ray shows us your entire mouth, including your sinuses and jawbone. Lastly, we may take occlusal X-rays, which can help us determine if you require orthodontic treatment or if you have any bite problems. X-rays are extremely safe, despite the common misperceptions about them. While it may be a little bit unnerving to have us place a heavy lead vest over you then walk into another room, that is just an extra precaution to ensure both of our safety. Our technicians often take multiple X-rays per day of our patients’ mouths, and this helps prevent cumulative exposure. However, on the grand scope of it, the amount of radiation that comes from X-rays is quite minimal. To put it into perspective, the amount of radiation you get from a bitewing X-ray is less than the amount that you would get from a short, 1-hour airplane flight. It is also less than an entire year’s worth of natural radiation that you would experience from sunshine. We advise our patients to get dental X-rays every two years unless there have been any pressing medical concerns that may require more frequent X-rays. They are very safe and very helpful in making sure your mouth remains healthy.
