Scaling and Root Planing Salem OR

Taking care of your mouth is essential for keeping it happy and healthy. It is recommended that you brush at least twice a day and floss once a day, as well as have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined twice a year. When you are lax in your oral care, your risk for developing periodontal disease increases significantly. If periodontal disease does develop, we can help to restore the health of your mouth with scaling and root planing.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is also commonly known as gum disease. It is a bacterial infection that starts in your gums. When bacteria and plaque linger on your teeth, they begin to irritate your gums. This irritation triggers an inflammatory response from your immune system, which causes the tissue to swell. Without treatment, the tissue begins to pull away from your teeth. Periodontal pockets begin to form. These pockets collect plaque and bacteria, which causes them to grow deeper.

Eventually, periodontal disease can lead to gum recession, tooth loss, and serious oral health issues. If you notice that your gums are red and swollen and that they bleed when you brush and floss, it is important that you schedule an appointment right away.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are a set of treatments that are common for periodontal disease. They provide your teeth with a deep cleaning that is aimed at eliminating irritation and inflammation so that your gums can begin to heal and reattach properly to your teeth. While the procedure is minimally invasive, a local anesthetic is administered so that you do not feel any discomfort during treatment.

Scaling is the process of cleaning the visible surfaces of your teeth. This is done using a special tool called a scaler, which enables us to remove even the most stubborn tartar from your teeth. We are also able to access the areas you may not be able to clean effectively at home. Special attention is given to your gum line and just below it. We work carefully to completely remove all buildup from all surfaces of your teeth.

Root planing is the process of cleaning the root surfaces of your teeth. Special tools are inserted below your gum line so that we can remove plaque, bacteria, and other toxins from the roots of your teeth. Smoothing the surfaces of your roots prevents new bacterial build up from accumulating. An antibacterial rinse is administered below your gums as well. This is done to help kill any bacteria that might still be present.

With the buildup removed from all surfaces of your teeth, irritation is alleviated, which allows your gums to heal. After your treatment is complete, you are scheduled for a follow up to make sure that your gums are healing properly.
