Wisdom Teeth Removal Salem OR

Smiling patient sitting a dental chair while her dental assistant speaks with her about wisdom teeth removal in Oak Park Dental in Salem, ORNumerous patients eventually need to have their wisdom teeth removed.

While some wisdom teeth can grow naturally without an issue, one or more may become impacted and need extra care and attention at our office.

At Oak Park Dental, we can provide you with the information you need to take care of your wisdom teeth and keep your mouth healthy and strong.

What is the Problem with Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth most of our patients get in their mouths. They may appear sometime after the patient turns 17.

Some people never develop wisdom teeth, which is completely normal. For others, these wisdom teeth will come in and enter the oral cavity without any issues.

Many times, the wisdom teeth will come in naturally.

When our patients take care of their teeth and keep their routine dental exams, we can check for any potential issues with the wisdom teeth early on and prevent any additional complications.

The wisdom teeth are designed to come in and fit naturally with the rest of your teeth and we can try and take preventative measures to insure this happens.

However, other patients develop impacted wisdom teeth. This happens when the teeth do not have enough room to appear in the mouth and fail to develop normally.

The other teeth develop in the mouth early on and get comfortable in their positions so when the wisdom teeth try to push through there is limited room for them.

When the wisdom tooth is impacted, or not given enough room to appear normally, protruding through the gum, they may appear partially or not at all.

These teeth can cause other dental issues.

Our office can look for signs of impacted teeth and their issues early on, helping to provide you with the best treatment possible.

Why Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

When an impacted wisdom tooth tries to come in, it is important to remove it as early as possible. The longer it stays in the mouth, the more concerning it can become with regard to potential complications.

They can protrude toward the second molar or come in pointing toward the back of the mouth causing discomfort and potentially becoming infected if left alone.

We see patients who have wisdom teeth grow at a right angle to the other teeth.
This often makes it appear like the wisdom tooth is lying down inside the jawbone.

This can be very painful and cause misalignment when the patient tries to chew.

Another issue we have seen is a wisdom tooth growing upright under a protruding tooth. This also can be very painful and cause problems.

None of these are the preferable option for wisdom teeth.

Obviously, the issues described can and will cause other problems for a patient’s dental health if left unaddressed.

Wisdom teeth extraction may be the best option to help deal with impacted wisdom teeth and to keep the rest of your teeth as strong as possible.
